One of the kickstarter pledges is guild master and at £5k you get to design your own guild. SOmeone obviously has far too much money and has pledged and it has been anounced that they have been working with the designers and come up with the Engineers Guild.

How was the practice game last night. Did it end 1-0?

The game stayed 1-0 but would have turned as 2 of the fishermen were out on the side lines. The basic gameplay is simple to understand but I have raised a few questions to te designers for things that popped up during the game for clarification. The fishermen had excellent movement and scored in the first turn but they became too seperated and the butchers took out shark in 2 turns. The game has some similar mechanics to warmamachine and bloodbowl/dreadball but there was 1 major difference that took me awhile to get used too and that was alternate model movement, it means you need to plan further ahead for your synergies. The mascots have a bigger impact on the game than I thought - I made the mistake of killing the butchers dog early in a turn and the bonus this gave to his other player for the turn was massive. Absolutly enjoyed the game and cant wait for a rematch and some of the other playtest teams to be released.

Yeah it was good fun. I think most games I have been playing over the last 4-5 years have used alternating activation rather than IGOUGO. I find it keeps both players involved and allows you to respond to the opponents moves.
I think that the scrum that took up the last bunch of turns was down to inexperience as much as anything. With the right figures the stalemate could have been broken. Also I wasn't making Princess kick the ball as she only had a kick of 1 and was surrounded, however it occurs to me that I could have declared a kick in a favourable direction, automatically failed, but scattered. If a scattered ball passes within 1" of a figure it can claim the ball and the kick scatter can be aimed to some extent. I think I would do that if it came up again.

I was thinking similar things around the scrum. I think I should have backed off, placed my players ready for a counter attack and let you score. Getting in a scrum with the butchers isnt a good idea but at least it didnt include Boar and Ox! In the first turn I played the fishermen to their strength running through and scoring, I then forgot about this and worried too much about fighting for the ball. I would have to check the rules but as princess was surounded I think the ball would have gone to one of my players of you missed as an interception.

Yes if I had kicked over one of yours you would have intercepted but Princess had some of mine adjacent too. They need to think about the details of interception: whether the base of the ball overlapping another base is it or whether the 1" snap to player counts. If I could have arranged to do a failed kick into a few of my players they would have had a good chance of intercepting the scatter.

James - let me know when you are up for a rematch as want to try again but try different tactics with the fishermen. In these type of games I often play a fighting based team I reverted to type after I scored and tried to fight for the ball back but I think I learnt that there will be better ways to defend!
I need to make use of the playbook better, I often went for the best result and think I need to consider the bonus from momentum more.
I was thinking about the scrum problem and in a couple of the turns uyou built up a stach of momentum - you could have spent some to give princess more dice for a kick. Even if you only spent 1 momentum if the pass was a success you would have then got it back!

Check out this video from Beast of War
Its a long one but interesting, The first 14 minutes is general gaming chit chat but then goes into a 3v3 demo game of Guild Ball. At around the 54 minute mark they then have a chat with the designer and talk about 3d terain features (running up staires and passing off a balcony, Dynamic weather(if torential rain puddles markers grow during the game), that they have played 11v11 on a 4x4 table. You can see a couple of the minis around the 1hr12 mark

The Alchemist guild has finally been revealed. Like the look but not so sure about the robot mascot would have prefered a lab rat swarm. Check out the kickstarted as the have adapted who the Union will play for to include the Brewers and Alchemists.
